3 Tips For Courting Your Dream Career
Regardless of how good you are at what you do, your dream career doesn’t just fall in your lap. In fact, the process is much like dating, since in both instances, you’re looking for that perfect fit that will allow you both to thrive. Keep the following three tips in mind for courting your dream career:
Get to know all aspects of a career. Just like you can’t know everything about someone after having one coffee together, you’re not going to know everything about a career after a few months in an entry-level position. In fact, you’ll keep discovering things about a profession for as long as you actively work in it. That’s why if you believe you’ve found your dream career, you should try to learn all about it. Read books by people in your field, talk to others who’ve been at it for decades, and stay on top of new developments in your sector. The more information you have, the better you’ll be able to decide if this career path is right for you.
Figure out if you have a future together. Even if you date someone for a while, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re going spend your life together. There are always some things that cause friction—and it’s up to both parties to see if you can overcome that friction and be together for the long term. The same goes for your dream career. You’ll run into aspects you don’t like. It’s up to you to determine whether those aspects are a deal breaker or not.
Commit. If you’ve found that special person and you both agree you have a future together, the next step is usually to commit. It’s no different for your dream career. If you’re good at what you do, enjoy your job, and find it rewarding, then don’t let anything distract you. You’ll undoubtedly encounter setbacks, but if you truly love your profession and you’re good at your job, you’ll be able to overcome all challenges and keep working towards your career goals.
Just like when you’re dating, you need to get to know what a job is like before you can commit. With these three tips in mind, you’ll soon discover whether this is truly your dream career or not.
