Building Your Skills For a Career Change
Even if you feel you are emotionally ready to make a career change, you may not be physically ready to make the move. If you are entering a new career field, you may need to get some experience or coursework in your field of interest.
There are several ways to build your skills and prepare for a career change before actually leaving your current place of employment.
Take online courses to get up to speed with the latest computer software applications. If you are in a position where you aren't using the latest technology, it's vital your computer skills get up-to-date before trying to make a career change. If you cannot find the classes you need online, consider taking a night or weekend course at a local community college or trade school.
Get a higher education. If you need a Master's degree for your new career and you don't have one, then obviously you need to concentrate on the degree before making a career change. Fortunately these days, there are many online colleges where you can get higher degrees without becoming a full-time student. Take the online classes at your own pace as you prepare yourself for new employment.
Do freelance work. If possible, take on freelance jobs in your potential career field in order to get some experience under you belt. There are many freelance job banks online where you can search for possible freelance assignments. This is especially helpful if you are looking to get into a career in writing, editing or web design and development.
Volunteer on the weekends. Volunteering will not only give you an opportunity to get valuable work experience in your career area of choice, but it's also good for your soul.
Making a career change can be exciting, but preparing yourself with the proper skills and experience will assure your success.
