Ongoing sluggish wage growth has been one of the most puzzling characteristics of the current U.S. economic recovery cycle, which has just completed its eighth year of slow and uneven growth. Average wage gains are still hovering in the 2.5% range, compared to above-3% growth prior to the recession. Plenty of theories have been put forward to try to explain the persistent sluggishness, from slowdowns in productivity and inflation, to underlying weaknesses in the labor market, to the effects of baby boomer retirements.
